Community Events

Rockville Centre Historical Society

The Museum of the Village of Rockville Centre invites one and all to visit and enjoy the historic restoration at 28 Hempstead Ave. Summer hours are Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and also by appointment for groups. On display are kitchen tools, carpentry tools, period furniture, pharmaceutical collectibles and much more. The Victorian Garden is in full bloom for all to enjoy. There is no fee. 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament

On Aug. 14 the tournament will feature a sports raffle and lively competition. Doors open at noon; tip-off is at 1 p.m. at the Recreation Center, 111 N.Oceanside Road. The event benefits Hoops 4 Hope Charity and will show which team has what it takes to win. Runners Club Informational Meeting

The South Shore Fitness Runners Club will hold an informative seminar on a new 10-week program beginning in September. The Runners Club meets weekly with instructional seminars on endurance training, mental preparation and related topics. Stop World Hunger Tennis Tournament

Register by Aug. 16 for the 30th

annual Stop World Hunger Tennis

Tournament, honored as the 2010 “Innovative Tennis Program of the Year” will involve recreational tennis players from more than 50 communities across Long Island. It will take place between Aug. 28 and Nov. 14. Divisions are set up according to ability levels and location. Players schedule their own matches at mutually convenient times and sites. The cost for the tournament is $6 for singles and $10 for doubles. The tournament format consists of no elimination, round-robin play. Awards are presented to winners in each division. Final Nutcracker audition

On Aug. 17, Leggz Ltd. Dance, 222 Sunrise Highway, will hold auditions for classically trained men and women for the annual full-length production of the “Nutcracker Suite” ballet with the South Shore Symphony Orchestra. A Taste of Israel

Generation Next, the young leadership division of the American Friends of Beit Issie Shapiro will hold its third annual ‘Taste of Israel’ wine tasting on Aug.18 at Eden Gallery (437 Madison Avenue). Founded in 1981, Beit Issie Shapiro is a center in Ra’anana, Israel that works with children and adults with special needs. It provides state of the art therapy for individuals with developmental disabilities, and training and support for their families. Through direct services, groundbreaking research and training, Beit Issie Shapiro impacts the lives of over 30,000 people internationally every year. Generation Next is seeking partners who support the commitment of young leaders to improving the lives of others in our society. West End Community Day

The annual fair will be held on N. Centre Avenue in front of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center on Aug. 21 from noon to 4 p.m.

Homemakers meeting

The Rockville Centre Chapter of Homemakers invites the public to its meeting on Sept. 11 at the John A.Anderson Recreation Center, 111 N. Oceanside Rd, The group encourages community service and teaches many crafts including beading, sewing, knitting and cooking. Summer Programs

Summer programs: Baseball School, Girls Basketball Clinic, Boys and Girls Lacrosse Camps, RVC Rec “Ultimate Gymnastic School,” Mad Science Camps, Cartoon-Time, Computer Explorer, Tennis Lessons, Happy Piano Adventure and assorted Gymnastics clinics have started. The Summer Playground Program, in its 56th consecutive year, is also under way and will run through Aug. 12. The center also offers tennis on its courts that are open seven days a week from 8 a.m. through dusk, aerobic exercise classes and summer birthday parties for village residents from ages 2-12. Call the Rec Center for schedules and fees.

Fall program registration

All village residents should have received their 2010-11 annual Recreation Department brochure. It lists all programs offered by the Recreation Department for pre-schoolers through senior citizens. Everyone is encouraged to register early, as most programs have enrollment limits. Call (516) 678-9339 for further information.

AARP Defensive Driving:

Aug. 12 and Aug.19 at 6 p.m. You must attend both evenings. This course is open to Sandel members and residents of Rockville Centre. $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-AARP members. Call the center for availability.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

Thursday Evenings are Back with Tai Chi from 4:15-5:15 and Yoga from 5:30-6:30. Both classes are taught by a certified instructor. $5 per session for non-members. A “Lite Bite” dinner is available for purchase.

Mondays at 2 p.m. A lively discussion on topics pulled from today’s headlines. $5 per session for non-members.

Afternoon of Old-Time Fun:

How to Get Up from a Fall

To mark Fall Prevention Month, which is September, the Sandel Center, in partnership with SportSet, will present a free two-session seminar, “How to Get Up From a Fall” on Sept. 8 and 15 at 10 a.m.

Sandel Senior Men’s Club:

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men. A variety of trips and programs are scheduled for August.

Rev. John McCarthy of St. Agnes Cathedral will celebrate a Mass for Deceased Children on Sept. 18 at 12:30 p.m. Members of the community are invited to come early to inscribe a child’s name in the “Book of Families.” All are welcome.
