Pumpkin Patch

Pumpkins for sale… at The Pumpkin Patch located at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 200 Hempstead Ave. from Monday – Saturday 10 a.m. –dusk and Sundays from noon – dusk. Open now through Oct. 31. Pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, hy, corn stalks, mums, apples and more. Special events: Oct. 9, Fair Day with guided Pony Rides $5; Granny’s Attic and refreshments. On Oct. 30, from 6-8 p.m. it will be transformed into a “Haunted Patch,” with a visit from Spiderman. Come in costume. Nassau Woman's Club

A Taste of Elegance

Join the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 16 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the St. Agnes Cathedral Parish Center for a night of dining — sampling village restaurants’ signature dishes — dancing and wine tasting. Village Trustee David Krasula and Robert Williams, Esq. are being honored. Advance tickets (until Oct. 10) are $25. Tickets the night of the event are $35. Two Family Concerts

The South Shore Symphony Orchestra, under the musical direction of Scott Jackson Wiley, will entertain local families with a lively exploration of the fascinating and intimate connection between music and nature with two family concerts. The first concert will be performed on Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. on the grounds of the Old Westbury Gardens. On the next day, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m., the symphony will perform a second concert at South Side Middle School. The orchestra will present Vaughan Williams' "The Wasps" (overture), Ravel’s "Mother Goose Suite," Mussorgsky’s "Night on Bald Mountain," Rimsky-Korsakov’s "The Flight of the Bumble Bee," Dvorak’s "In Nature’s Realm," Wagner’s "Forest Murmurs" (from Siegfried) and Dukas’s "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice." The concert at Old Westbury Gardens is free with admission to Museum Tickets. The concert at the Middle School is $15 for adults, children under 18, seniors and members of the Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts are free. Rockville Centre Historical Society

The Museum of the Village of Rockville Centre invites one and all to visit and enjoy the historic restoration at 28 Hempstead Ave. Hours are Saturday and Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and also by appointment for groups. On display are kitchen tools, carpentry tools, period furniture, pharmaceutical collectibles and much more. There is no fee. Poetry event at Molloy

Molloy College and its Writer-in-Residence, Barbara Novack, will host a poetry event featuring Sandy McIntosh and Phillip Lopate on Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room, Wilbur Arts Center on Molloy College’s Rockville Centre campus. This event is free and open to the

Rockville Centre Youth Council Meeting

Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Recreation Center. Local high school students are invited to come check out what the council is about and join one of its committees. The group also welcomes any businesses or community members and leaders with ideas or resources to come to its meetings or contact them at info@rvcyouthcouncil.org.

Fortnightly Club

On Oct. 19 the Fortnightly Club will present sculptor and Master of Fine Arts Benjamin Burton, who will present a fascinating program in a slightly different format. The meeting will take place at 1:30 p.m. in St. Mark's United Methodist Church on Hempstead Ave. Refreshments will follow the presentation.

Rockville Centre Museum Yard Sale

On Oct. 23, from 10 a.m..- 4 p.m., the museum will be selling excess items, including a dry sink circa 1880, sleigh, chairs, farm tools, tub, dishes, glassware, fixture parts, prototype machine models, art work, prints, lithos, photos, paintings, tools, telephone, vintage clothes and hats, coffee table books, mannequin parts, large quantity wood shelving, and much more. 9/11 Commemorative Vigil

Residents are invited to share the comfort of community at a brief candlelight prayer vigil commemorating the dedication of Rockville Centre's 9/11 Memorial on the Village Green at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 24. Please bring candles.

Village Art Club Meeting

The Village Art Club is pleased to present a live male model, Jack Holly at its next meeting on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room of the Rockville Centre Library, 221 N. Village Ave. Bring your pencils and a sketch pad for a fun evening of drawing. The meeting is free and open to the public. Membership is available to those who wish to join. St. Agnes Parish Celebration

Mardi Gras - The 48th Annual St. Agnes Parish Celebration on Oct. 30 fro, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the St. Agnes Parish Center. There will be a buffet dinner, open bar, music by "The Stingers," grand prize raffle and a silent auction. $50 per person in advance ($40 for seniors 65 and older) and $60 at the door if available. Need homework help?

Homework Helpers, a partnership program between the Sandel Senior Center Service Corps and the Rockville Centre Public Library offers help with homework to students in grades 1-6 every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. in the. The Library’s Career Center is now open Saturdays! Five computers available for your job search needs. All computers are equipped with Win-Way Resume Preparation software, MS Word and Office programs. Inter-net access and bookmarked job search websites. Printing available for resumes and cover letters. Hours of Operation: Mondays 9 am-noon, Tuesdays 1-5 pm, Saturdays 10 am-2 pm.

Jewelry by Ellen Grossman

The unique, hand crafted jewelry designs of Ellen Grossman will grace the display cases of the Rockville Centre Public Library throughout the month of October. A Rockville Centre resident, Ellen has been a working artist and jewelry designer for more than 30 years, displaying and winning awards in many juried art and jewelry shows. She attends numerous world class gem and bead shows, personally selecting beads and materials from the finest artisans. Upon request Ellen will happily create unique pieces using pre-selected beads. Shoes that Intrigue Me

Photographer Darlene Cunnup, while a native of South Carolina, has called Rockville Centre home for the past 15 years. The Rockville Centre Public Library is proud to display her exhibit “Shoes that Intrigue Me,” showcasing some of the many shoe photos she has taken in her career. Darlene believes shoes are a work of art. Cunnup credits her father for instilling her with her “camera know-how” and is a graduate of the New York Institute of Photography. Her photos have appeared in newspapers across the country and have been published by the International Library of Photography, and in books, most recently "PAUMANOK: Poems and Pictures of Long Island." Fall Program Registration

Registration is now being accepted for the Fall programs that begin the week of Sept. 19. All registrations are first-come, first-served and all participants must have valid 2010-11 recreation membership cards. Detailed flyers are available at the Rec Center or by calling (516) 678-9338 or 9339. New programs offered this year include: Kinder-crafts, Happy Piano Jamboree, Mad Science, Brush Strokes, Fencing, All-Star Sports, RVC Rec Center Gymnastic Competition Team and Dodgeball for Kids.

Fall Nursery School openings

There are a limited number of openings in the 2010-11 Nursery School program. These classes are for children entering kindergarten in Sept. 2011 and 2012. Call Peggy at (516) 678-9338 or 9339 for registration

Fishing Clinic

The New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation and the L.I. State Parks Commission will present the annual Freshwater Fishing Clinic at Hempstead Lake on Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The fee is $5 per person for anyone 12 and over. Skelos Golden Gathering

Senior Citizen information and exposition at the Recreation Center, 111 N. Oceanside Road on Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. - noon.

Halloween Mural Painting Contest

Boys and girls in grades 4 through 8 must register by Oct. 16 at the Recreation Center for the annual contest on Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to noon. The Halloween artists are invited to paint on paper that is taped to the walls of the Rec Center. Plaques are awarded for the best paintings in the elementary and middle school categories.

Ragamuffin parade and party

Rockville Centre's 20th annual Halloween Costume Party and Parade will take place on Oct. 31. Youngsters pre-k and up are invited to join the parade that starts at the Village Green, Maple and Lee avenues at 2 p.m. and proceeds down Maple Avenue to the Rec Center. At the Rec Center, there will be games, fun and prizes for the costumed marchers. Everyone must register for the parade and/or party at the center for $7 per family. In case of rain, the parade will be cancelled, but the party will begin at 3 p.m.

Goblin calls

Fill out the Goblin Slips at the party after the Ragamuffin Parade on Oct. 31 and you may be one of the lucky ones to receive a Goblin Call and Goblin prize on Halloween evening.

Operation Christmas child

The Rec Center will again collect school supplies, toiletries and small games for distribution to need children. Bring your donations, in their original packaging, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by early November.

Food donations needed

The Rec Center is accepting donations of canned and dry goods as well as frozen turkeys or turkey coupons for distribution to the needy. Bring donations Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. before Thanksgiving.

Open gym program

The main gymnasium of the Rec Center will be open for free play basketball for grades 4 and up on Saturday afternoons from 2-4:30 beginning Oct. 30. The evening open gym for grades 6 and up will begin Oct. 8 and Oct. 9 from 7:30 p.m. - 10:15 p.m. A valid 2010-11 Recreation Card is required for entry.

Halloween Party

Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. The annual costume party will feature Halloween treats, a costume parade and entertainment. $4 pp. ($8 late fee applies).

Sandel Senior Men’s Club

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men. A variety of trips and programs are scheduled. Check with the center for a schedule.
