The following art will be featured in the library through July:
Knits and beads by Leyla McDermott: Display cases
McDermott has always been interested in cooking, reading and handicrafts such as scrapbooking, knitting and crocheting. The current outlet for her artistry is jewelry design. She began designing jewelry when she was inspired by a beautiful piece of quartz from Tanzania which held sentimental value for her. McDermott continues to draw upon nature and emotion to create one-of-a kind jewelry; incorporating seed beads, gemstones, crystals, wire and chain. She considers the creation of her designs almost more important than the product, enjoying the Zen-like experience she achieves through her creative process.
McDermott was born in Istanbul, and emigrated to the United States at the age on 23, settling in Baldwin. In 1990 she graduated from St. Vincent’s Medical Technology School and worked for 21 years as a clinical chemist. She currently works at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City, and teaches Clinical Chemistry at Hunter College. She lives in South Hempstead with her husband, and enjoys spending time with their two daughters and their families.
