'Waking Sleeping Beauty' at Molloy's Madison Theatre

By the mid-1980’s the fabled animation studios of Walt Disney had fallen on hard times. "Waking Sleeping Beauty" is no fairy tale. It’s the true story of how Disney regained its magic with a staggering output of hits – "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast," "Aladdin," "The Lion King," and more over a 10-year period. A “talkback” with the producer will follow the event on March 8 at 7 p.m. Tickets for all seats are $15. 'My Life with Men and Other Animals' at Molloy College's Madison Theatre

The show offers a rollicking crash course in love, seduction, death — and olive oil. In this semi-autobiographical show, Maria Cassi provocatively poses the question, “by what rules do we live and who decides what they are?” In her own inimitable way, Cassi is a comic anarchist, reinventing the rules of her conservative upbringing to reflect her own maverick romanticism. With an expressive face, a gift for mimicry and a soulful voice, the charismatic performer traces her sensual journey from rebellion to freedom to true liberation. March 9 and 10 at 8 p.m. Orchestra seats $65-50; mezzanine $45-35. Student discounts available. For information, contact Beth Kurot, at (516) 678-5000 ext. 7714, the Box Office, ext. 7715 or visit www.madisontheatreny.org.

The Story and Significance of St. Brigid at Molloy College

On March 15 at 3 p.m., in the Multipurpose Room of the Public Square, Author Patricia Monaghan will tell the story that starts nearly 20 years ago when the Sisters of St. Brigid returned to Kildare, Ireland, where their order had been founded some thousand years before. Kildare, whose name in Irish means "church of the oak," had been the ancient site of a temple to the Celtic goddess, Brigid, before Christianity arrived in Ireland. There, a sacred flame represented the powers of healing, poetry and alchemy, both in Celtic and Christian times. Relit in 1993, that sacred flame now forms the centerpiece of the annual celebration of Lá Feile Brighe, the Feb. 1 festival of Brigid, attended by hundreds of people from Ireland and from around the globe. Monaghan, professor of interdisciplinary studies at DePaul University in Chicago, has written about the Brigid revival in her book "The Red-Haired Girl from the Bog: The Landscape of Celtic Myth and Spirit." She is the author as well of more than 20 other books of nonfiction and poetry, including "The Encyclopedia of Celtic Myth and Folklore." She has just returned from participating in the 2012 festival. Contact Catherine Tully Muscente, at (516) 678-5000 ext. 6218 or cmuscente@molloy.edu for information.
