Music in the Mountains: Molloy College presents the 'Irish Catskills' and Traditional Music Leeds, South Cairo and East Durham form the spine of the Irish Catskills, the choice vacation destination of New York’s Irish and Irish-Americans for generations in the 20th Century. Join the Irish Institute on Dec. 5 at 3 p.m. for an insightful lecture discussing the multifaceted relationship between Irish-Americans and this beloved region. This presentation, by Brendan Dolan, will examine the development of the area as a distinctively Irish destination, and some of the factors that have led to its relative decline. It will also examine the role of traditional music in the region as a reflection of the tastes of the Irish and Irish-Americans who created the phenomenon of the "Irish Catskills." Particular attention will be paid to the effects of Irish immigration on this resort area, and the gradual inclusion of successive waves of Irish into the American vacation experience. This talk will address the relationship between the successful assimilation of Irish into American society and its adverse effects on a once thriving ethnic vacationland. The talk will be accompanied by a large array of photos and musical examples that will trace the changing face of the area. The free event will take place in the Reception room in Kellenberg Hall on the Molloy College campus. For more information, contact Catherine Tully Muscente at (516) 678.5000 ext. 6218.

LIBRARY CLOSED
The following art will be featured at the library in the month of November:
Upper Concourse Gallery: Archival Photographs “Meet the Staff…of Yesteryear” The latest installment from Rockville Centre Public Library Archives features photographs of staff members from yesteryears. How many staffers do you recognize?
Lower Concourse Gallery: Oils by Mary Ann Klein The oil and water color paintings of Mary Ann Klein will be featured. The artist chooses as her subjects areas of fragile existence, timelessness and natural beauty. The changing shore, dunes and landscape of eastern Long Island, and more recently the lowlands of South Carolina, are geographic locales which have stories the artist delights in sharing. Klein is a member of the National Art League and the Montauk Artists’ Association, serving as an officer of the Art League for eight years. She has studied with Jim Ford, Angelo Grado, Ralph Acosta, Pedro Pecheco and Howard Rose. Her award-winning art has been featured at the Bayside Historical Society, Flushing Town Hall and the Parlour Gallery as well as at outdoor art shows and antique and specialty shops. Klein is represented by Christopher Gallery in Stonybrook.
Display Cases: Hand-Painted Porcelain by Mary Gosden The award-winning hand-painted porcelains of Mary Gosden will be highlighted during November. After graduating from Syracuse University with a degree in music education, Gosden turned to jobs related to the graphic arts, having missed her studies in art during her college years. Her marriage, the birth of her son and a move to Long Island led her to study porcelain painting from Christine Filpi. She began to sell her work and teach the techniques to beginners. Her china painting was filmed for an award-winning half-hour local television program. Gosden holds weekly classes in her home studio and on the Internet. She also paints and works with fused glass. Gosden’s porcelain art has received many awards. Her porcelains reflect her love for Art Deco style and make use of modern sand-blasting techniques which impart a distinctive style. Gosden teaches and publishes in magazines and journals, and is active in art organizations at the local, state and national levels. Her work may be purchased at private sales at her studio. Gosden resides in Floral Park.
