Village Art Club

The Village Art Club will begin its new season with a female model. Bring your pencils and pads and join them on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room of the Rockville Centre Public Library, 221 North Village Ave.

Antique fire truck rededication

The community is invited to join the officers and members of the Live Oak Engine Company, 103 Maple Ave. on Sept. 23 at 11 a.m. as they celebrate the 75th anniversary and rededicate their Ahrens-Fox antique fire apparatus. Other fire departments have been invited to display their antique trucks as well. A buffet luncheon follows. Raindate is Sept. 30. RSVP to eng1rcfd@optonline.net.

Indie Singer-Songwriter Kevin Devine at Molloy College

On Sept 26 at 8 p.m. Kevin Devine, an American songwriter and musician from New York will perform at the school's Madison Theatre. Devine, who is known for alternately introspective and political lyric and melodic acoustic guitar tunes. He cites his influences as Bob Dylan, Elliott Smith, Guns N’Roses, Brother Paramo and Nirvana, among others. Long Island Singer Rich Albergo to open for Devine. Orchestra/Mezzanine seats are $20. Italian singer Giada Valenti's "Tribute To Love" Show at Molloy

On Sept. 29 at 8 p.m.,Madison Theatre at Molloy College will present Italian singer and songwriter Giada Valenti who takes her audience on a romantic tour performing a selection of the most beautiful love songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Recently featured on ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS television, Giada sings and interprets hit after hit of the most famous songs from artist such as The Beatles, The Carpenters, The Doors, Journey, Perry Como, Edit Piaf, Robert Flack, Tony Bennett, Mina, Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey, Bette Midler and more. "Unorthodox" Author Breakfast

RSVP by Oct. 1 for "Unorthodox," an author/breakfast featuring Deborah Feldman who wrote a compelling personal story about leaving the Satmar Orthodox community of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The Oct. 14 event, open to the public, is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. and is jointly sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women's South Shore Section, Central Synagogue and Congregation B'nai Sholom-Beth David. It will take place at Congregation B'nai Sholom-Beth David, 100 Hempstead Ave. Books ($18) will be available for signing. The couvert is $36. Fortnightly Club

The Fortnightly's fall seasons kicks off on Oct. 2 with the musical duo Sweet Lorriane who will entertain with a variety of songs from several different genres. The duo will be introduced by the co-chairwomen Lesia Shmorhun and Lucille Villa. The meeting and program will take place at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mark's Methodist Church on Hempstead Avenue. Visitors are welcome.

Garden Potpourri

On Oct. 4 from 10 a.m - 2 p.m., the St. Agnes Mothers' Club will hold one of the fall season's most anticipated events. This year's Garden Potpourri will take place on the beautiful grounds of 45 South Marion Place. The community is invited to come and enjoy a fun-filled day.

Fortnightly Club

On Oct. 16, the Fortnightly Club's art chairwoman, Rosanna Clavin, will introduce the day's program, "The Art of Going Green," presented by the Town of Hempstead. The meeting and program will begin at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mark's Methodist Church on Hempstead Avenue. Visitors are welcome.

Hispanic Brotherhood/Do Good Shopping Event

The Hispanic Brotherhood is involved with Lord & Taylor's Do Good Shopping Event to raise funds and to save shoppers money. The tickets cost $5 each and with that comes a variety of coupons to be used at the Garden City store location on Oct. 30. Included in the coupons are two 25 percent off coupons and a 15 percent off coupon (included in that is cosmetics and fragrances). Additionally, a Lord & Taylor credit card is used, shoppers get an extra 10 percent off. There also are prizes given out throughout the store

Used cleat collection

Members of the 8th grade South Side Middle School soccer team are collecting used soccer cleats in good condition. Donations will help ensure that children around the world have the equipment they need to play soccer. Collection boxes will be placed in the SSMS cafeteria and Soccer Station through the fall.

Tree of Life Yoga

Central Synagogue of Nassau County, 430 DeMott Ave., is again sponsoring a Fall session, with evening classes of yoga. The classes are open to yoga students of all levels. The Tree of Life Yoga will be offering a series of 12 classes, beginning on Sept. 13, at 6:30 p.m. — a new day and time. You may pay as you go for $15 a class. Members of the community are invited to participate. All new participants may attend the Sept. 13th class at no charge. The Career Center is open on Saturdays. Five computers are available for your job search needs. All computers are equipped with Win-Way Resume Preparation software, MS Word and Office programs. Inter-net access and bookmarked job search websites. Printing is available for resumes and cover letters. Dichroic Jewelry and Glass Art by Judyanne Creations Display Cases

Judy Bick and Anne Sunshine are

co-owners of Judyanne Creations. Together they design unique glass art and dichroic jewelry using warm glass techniques. They have found warm glass to be a perfect way to employ imagination and creativity, combining colors and textures into one-of–a-kind fused glass art pieces much sought after by collectors.

"Mostly Maine"

Watercolors by Pat Hoshino

Pat Hoshino is a Long Island artist who began working in watercolors and instantly fell in love with the medium. Her affinity for the medium is clearly evident in her work. A representational painter, her subjects are most often flowers, landscapes, and interesting people. The majority of her landscapes are of New England, especially Maine, and of Long Island. Pat is well known for her paintings of the chessmen in Washington Square Park, as well as, her personal favorite, Golden Girls, of three women sitting on a park bench in San Francisco. Hoshino has been an artist member of the National Art League for more than 20 years having studied with a number of nationally acclaimed teachers. Her work has been widely exhibited at both local and national shows, and has received numerous accolades.

Town of Hempstead

EASEL Annual Show

The lower level galleries will feature the artistic efforts of members of Town of Hempstead’s Experienced Art Students Enrichment League or EASEL in September. Many members of this creative and spirited group have won awards and exhibited across the region. EASEL holds meetings every Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Oceanside Senior Center, 2900 Rockaway Ave. Programs include art demonstrations, field trips, workshops, discussions and, most importantly, the opportunity for members to meet and collaborate with fellow artists. Students and community members came together to create mannequins dedicated to the memory of talented artists, writers and performers whose lives ended too soon due to substance abuse. The result was this

Fall Nursery School

There are a limited number of openings in the Fall 2012 nursery school classes at the John A. Anderson Recreation Center, 111 North Oceanside Road for children entering kindergarten in September 2013 or 2014. Classes follow the Rockville Centre public school holiday schedule. Openings are in the morning and afternoon classes. There are also opportunities for extended day programs.

Fall program registration

Registration is now being accepted for the Fall programs that begin the week of Sept. 17. All registrations are first-come, first-served and all participants must have valid 2012-2013 Recreation Center membership card. New programs offered this year include: Happy Piano, Baby Bounce & Jamboree, Roll Around Fun Card, Bricks for Kids, Jr. Gourmet Cooking, Artful Adventures, Fencing, Schoolhouse Chess, All 4 One Yoga, as well as the Rec. Center’s competition and training gymnastics teams. Detailed flyers are available at the Rec Center or by calling (516) 678-9338 or 9339.

Part-time jobs available

Residents who are at least 16 years old may apply to work part-time on weekday and weekend programs, parties and special events. Applications are available at the Rec. Center's office.

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men.
