Molloy College Lecture: In the Land of Invisible Women

Author Quanta Ahmed, M.D., will discuss her book, "In the land of Invisible Women: A Female Doctor’s Journey in the Saudi Kingdom," on Feb. 9 at 5:30 p.m. in the Reception Room of Kellenberg Hall at Molloy College. Her story is a fascinating account of a Muslim female as she describes her experiences in Saudi Arabia with color, insight and perspective. Phillips House Hummel exhibit Hummel figuring enthusiasts will marvel at the new exhibit at the Phillips House Museum of Rockville Centre. Rare and exquisite examples of the best of Hummels from the extensive collection of a Rockville Centre resident will be on display through March 25 at the museum. While the list is too long to publish among the many figurines displayed are: We Wish You The Best, Harmony In Four Parts, Let's Tell The World, Land In Sight, Call To Worship and Strike Up The Band! Also on display will be a complete set of Hummel bells. The exhibit is free to the public, although donations are always gratefully and deeply appreciated. Tree of Life Yoga

Central Synagogue, 430 DeMott Ave. is again sponsoring a mini session of evening yoga classes open to students of all levels. "No Kidding, Me Too," at Molloy's Madison Theatre

Molloy College's Madison Theatre presents “No Kidding, Me Too!” with Joe Pantoliano on Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. $15 for all seats. Pantoliano, an American film and television actor, has appeared in "The Sopranos," " The Matrix," "Goonies" and "Risky Business." He has chosen to speak about his struggles with mental illness to remove stigmas that are commonly associated with it. He founded a non-profit organization, “No Kidding, Me Too,” to unite members of the entertainment industry in educating the public about mental illness. “Talk-back” with Joe Pantoliano will follow the showing of the documentary. Fortnightly Club

On Feb. 21, Fortnightly will take a stroll down Memory Lane, when it presents Fortnightly-Remembering Things Past, with Rosalie Monaco, Norma Meyer and Camille Altman. The meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the United Church of RVC on Morris Avenue. Visitors are welcome.

Village Art Club

The Village Art Club welcomes Jeff Webb to its meeting in the downstairs meeting room of the Rockville Centre Public Library on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. He will demonstrate an oil landscape. Jeff is a professor at Nassau Community College and an instructor at the Owl Art Center in Cedarhurst. He is one of the founders of the Pastel Society of America in 1974. He works in all mediums. Defensive Driving Course

RVC Education Foundation gala

The annual gala, the foundation's major fundraiser, is set for March 3 at the Garden City Hotel. Board of Education Vice-President Mark Masin is the honoree, South Side HIgh School Assistant Principal and I.B. Coordinator John Murphy will receive the Ruth Fins Memorial Award. Tickets for the gala are $150 per person and include dinner, drinks, dessert and dancing. There will be a silent auction that evening, with details to follow. 92nd Street Y: Persian Jews in America

On March 4 at 8 p.m. Congregation B'nai Sholom Beth David presents Persian Jews in America: A 2,500-Year-Old Community Confronts the New World with Morgan Hakimi and Saba Soomekh. The Jews of Persia trace their roots to the Babylonian exile of the 6th century BCE. Now Iranian Jews, approximately 70,000 live in the US, primarily in large enclaves in Los Angeles and Great Neck, immigrating in the aftermath of the Iranian Revolution of 1970. How does an ancient community face this geographic and cultural transition while preserving its core identity? Hear a panel of community leaders from both coasts address this unique chapter in Jewish immigration to the US. Morgan Hakimi,PhD, is co-chair of the psychology department at Touro College, Los Angeles. Dr. Saba Soomekh is now a visiting professor in Jewish Studies at Loyola Marymount University and researches the Persian community in California. Paintings by Diane Meeker

Meeker loved painting and drawing when she was a child, and her efforts won her accolades and awards in high school. She married young, however, and put her artistic endeavours aside while raising her family. Taking inspiration from Grandma Moses, who started painting later in her life, Meeker returned to pursue her talents as a mature artist. As a mother of two grown children and four wonderful grandchildren, she enjoys painting in both acrylics and watercolors. The artist can be reached at (516) 708-5101.

Suburban Art League Annual Show

The suburban Art League was established in 1963 to increase cooperation among artists, art students, craftsmen, publishers, and all engaged in artistic pursuits;and to provide a registry for artists. The League hosts competitions and exhibits and promotes the study of art through monthly art demonstrations for both members and non-members at the Syosset Woodbury Community Center in Woodbury on the first Tuesday of every month except July and August.

Spring Program Registration

Registration for spring programs begins on Feb. 13 for residents and Feb. 20 for non-residents. Detailed flyers describe a wide array of activities offered for toddlers through senior citizens, including Happy Piano, Mad Science, Schoolhouse Chess, yoga for special needs, ice skating and guitar lessons.

February Recess Events

Detailed flyers are available describing recess activities Feb. 19 through 26. They will also be printed in the Feb. 16 issue of the Herald. Events include bus trips, sports days, the Annual Cherry Pie Eating Contest, open gym, Roll-Around and more. All trip and activity participants must be registered members of the RVC Parks and Recreation Department for the 2011-2012 year. To register, a parental permission slip and the appropriate fee must be submitted to the Rec Center office PRIOR to the day of the event.

Connor and Friends

The fall/winter play group for children with special needs is scheduled from 2:30 - 4 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 12, Feb. 26, March 11, March 25 and April 15. Playtime is one hour, followed by light snacks and refreshments. Free, but reservations are necessary. Contact Marianne or Paul Lawless at mplawless@verizon.net.

Men’s Softball

The Recreation Department currently has spring softball information available for men’s teams. The completed rosters with all fees are due Feb. 15. Games are tentatively scheduled to begin the week of March 25.

Spring Shape-up

Square dancing with nationally known caller Lee Kopman, Monday and Tuesday evenings from 7 to 8:30 and 8:30 to 10. $7 per person.

Co-ed cardio workout with Nancy Codispoti on Mondays (Step Aerobics), Tuesdays (CCW) and Thursdays (CCW) from 7 to 8:15. Pay as you go for $5 each session.

Zumba exercise to a Latin beat with Ruth Karhu meets Monday mornings, Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Pay as you go for $5.00 each session.

The weight room at the Rec is available to adults seven days a week. The room features a treadmill, recumbent bike, rowing machine, Stairmaster and Arc Trainer, as well as free weights, Cybex machines and a bench cage. Gymnastic Meets

The Rec Center's two competitive Gymnastics Teams, RVC United and RVC Ultimate will compete in a series of meets against each other and three Long Island teams on Mar. 3, Mar. 11, Apr. 1, April 21, May 5, all at 12:30 p.m. Individual and team championships are on May 19 and June 17. Spectators are encouraged to come out and support the gymnasts. Admission is free.

Summer Nursery School

and Playground

Registration for Summer Nursery School will begin on March 5 for children who will be entering Kindergarten in 2012 or 2013. Registration for Summer Playground and Summer Rec. Programs will begin on March 26 for children entering grades 1-8 in September 2012. Detailed flyers are available mid-February.

Birthday Parties and Rentals

The Rec Center offers age-appropriate birthday parties to Village residents for pre-school and elementary age children, seven days a week. Open Gym Program

The main gymnasium of the Rec. Center will be open for free-play basketball for grades 4 and up on Saturday afternoons from 2-4:30 p.m. The evening open gym for grades 6 and up is open from 7:30 to 10:15 p.m. Valid Recreation Cards for 2011-2012 are required.
