Rockville Centre issued heat advisories Friday, June 29, the first day of an anticipated five-day heat wave.
Noting that excessive heat and humidity are expected through Monday, the advisory provided tips on how to stay cool and healthy in he heat. To avoid heatstroke or dehydration, the advisory reads, residents should stay out of the heat, use fans and air conditioners to cool their rooms and drink plenty of fluids, especially water.
A cooling center will be open at the Rec Center on North Oceanside Road.
"Monitor your children and check on your elderly neighbors to make sure they are all right," the advisory said. "If you need emergency assistance, call the Rockville Centre Police Department using 911."
A second advisory urged residents to monitor their power usage to help avoid any outages.
"Turn off all unnecessary lighting, appliances and electronic equipment," the advisory reads. "Avoid unnecessary use of water and air conditioning.”
