On March 21, the Rockville Centre Public Library’s staff welcomed two librarians from the National Library Board of Singapore — Raneetha Rajaratnam, senior manager, and Fong Ying Yi, librarian.
The pair, with four other librarians from Singapore, had traveled to the United States to attend the biennial Public Library Association’s conference held this year in Philadelphia. Following the conference, the delegation traveled to New York to visit libraries in the metropolitan area, and included the Rockville Centre Public Library — the only suburban library — on their tour.
Rajaratnam and her colleagues selected our local library based on online research that highlighted the diverse programs it offers for both children and adults. Of particular interest to the visitors were programs for young children.
The visiting delegation met with Rockville Centre librarians and staff to discuss strategies to engage the community in library use, youth services, library management systems, starting and sustaining book clubs and adult programs. Both groups enjoyed the opportunity to share highlights from their programs and made plans to continue sharing information about programs of mutual interest.
