On the rainy morning of Wednesday, Dec. 7 in Centennial Park at Mill River, Rockville Centre veterans, officials and residents commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack.
The attack, which took place on Dec. 7, 1941, is still vivid in the minds of many veterans, and the remembrance serves as a reminder of the importance of preparation and vigilance, said Joseph Scarola, commander of the American Legion Post 303 on Maple Avenue.
Present at the ceremony were village Police Commissioner Charles Gennario, Fire Department Chief John Bushing and Mayor Francis Murray, who threw a wreath into the water.
“The purpose is to remember those that have sacrificed themselves for our country, Scarola said. “We need to remember what those who died did for us.”
