A Rockville Centre resident was part of the Johns Hopkins NCAA Division III Cross Country team that won the school’s first national championship at the LaVerne Gibson Championship Course on Nov. 17.
Ashley Murphy, a sophomore, was the number five runner on the national championship team that won the first women’s title in the university’s history and the first Division III title since men’s swimming team won in 1979.
The team defeated the runner-up, Wartburg College, by 63 points, which is the highest margin of victory in a women’s Division III race since 2002.
Murphy finished the 6k race in 22 minutes and 38 seconds, finishing in the top 90.
Murphy is second team for the All-Centennial Conference and recently had a personal best time of 21 minutes, 49 seconds in the Centennial Conference Championship 6k on Oct. 27.
Murphy is majoring in international studies and economics.
