Of a tryout field of 123 candidates, Matt Kavanagh, former Chaminade Flyer, was selected to the 23-man U19 Men’s National Team that is set to play in the World Championship in Turku, Finland this July. The team is made up of players from eight different states but showcases 10 players from Long Island.

To prepare for the World Championships, the National Team will be playing the Long Island All Stars at Mitchel Field on June 16 at 7 p.m., on the main turf field. Suiting up against Kavanagh will be none other than his longtime friend and teammate Walter Rooney, who is headed to the University of Denver in the fall. Rooney was selected to be on the elite Long Island All Star roster that boasts the best talent Long Island has to offer. The game should prove to be a heated contest as it was the Long Island All Stars that came away with the victory in 2008 — the last time these two teams met.

In addition to the game, there will be a vendor village and plenty of concessions. Tickets to the game can be purchased online at www.flglacrosse.com at a discounted price of $7, or at the field for $10. All ticket proceeds will directly benefit US Lacrosse and Lax 4 All, a not-for-profit organization that helps spread lacrosse to communities around Long Island.
