Rockville Centre salon styles ucpn students for their prom

Laura Seltzer from Sparks Unisex Salon on Park Avenue spent a recent day off in a very special way. She traveled to the Children’s Learning Center (CLC) at the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County (ucpn) and styled hair for a classroom of girls getting ready to attend the school prom the next day.

While getting her hair done at Sparks recently, Pat Quinn, ucpn’s Community Outreach manager told Laura and her mom, the salon owner, Yndiana, about the prom for about 60 students at the CLC. Laura volunteered to come and do hair for any girls who were interested. She did mini-hair makeovers for about 15 young ladies who enjoyed every moment of the experience!

The classroom had a spa-like atmosphere for a while with teachers, aides and therapists doing nails and facials to help the students feel their prettiest. “I’m so very grateful to Laura for this kindness,” said Quinn. “The beaming smiles of the young ladies that enjoyed new hairstyles were a joy to see and it was her goodness that made it happen. Laura even thought about the staff members helping and offered a flower or clip to each as she told them she admired them for the important work they do.”

The prom theme this year was “Sweet Shop Chocolate Factory” and as the students were getting their beauty treatments, other volunteers were transforming the school gym into the “Sweet Shop Ballroom” for the May 18 party that took place during the school day.

Located in Roosevelt, the CLC serves 250 children from age 2 – 21 who are challenged by cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities including speech and language delay.
