School officials are contemplating a bond to address outstanding infrastructure issues at each of the district’s buildings. The potential bond will be on the agenda at the next regular Board of Education meeting, scheduled for this Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in South Side High School. Architects from BBS, the firm that has worked with the district on its long range plans, are expected to be on hand to present different options for renovations at South Side High School, along with construction timetables and costs. One of the items being discussed for the high school calls for the elimination of the ‘portables’ at its east end. These temporary structures have been serving as overflow instructional space for more than 30 years, and have long outlived their usefulness. Another significant improvement contemplated at the high school would be the modernization and revamping of its science labs.
Board members will also discuss infrastructure work in South Side Middle School and each of the district’s elementary schools. Officials say there are important items that need to be addressed to maintain the integrity of all of Rockville Centre’s schools, as Board of Education trustees and district administrators continue to look toward the future.
“Our buildings are aging and have many needs,” said school board President Liz Dion, “We look forward to the public joining in the discussion as we evaluate these needs over the coming months.”
The Sept. 27 meeting will be a continuation of a discussion that was started at the board’s most recent public work session on Sept. 10. District officials have indicated that they may present a bond vote to the public in early 2013.
