Rockville Centre school, library races are uncontested

Two school board trustees — President Liz Dion and Vice President Mark Masin — will be on the ballot again, seeking new terms, in the Rockville Centre Board of Education election and budget vote on May 15 at South Side High School. Dion and Masin returned completed nominating petitions to the district clerk well before the deadline of 5 p.m. on Monday, and will run unopposed.

Eileen Burke Bucaria will seek a fifth term on the Rockville Centre Public Library’s Board of Trustees, but Vice President Vito Iacobellis, who has been a trustee for three years, will step down when his term ends, to the regret of Library Director Maureen Chiofalo.

“He is an excellent board member,” Chiofalo said of Iacobellis, “and we’re very sorry to lose him, but other obligations have become more critical for him.” With no candidate stepping forward yet to run for Iacobellis’s seat, Chiofalo added that anyone interested in serving on the library board should contact her to learn about the options that are available, which include a write-in vote or appointment to the board.

Liz Dion

Dion, who was born and raised in Malverne and returned to Long Island after graduating from the University of Massachusetts, is a 21-year-resident of Rockville Centre. She is seeking her second term on the school board.

An information technology consultant, she works with companies that are installing and supporting computer systems. Dion, 46, lives with her husband, Peter; son Noah, a junior at South Side High School; and daughter Hannah, an eighth-grader at South Side Middle School.

As an advocate for children, Dion has had extensive volunteer experience with the middle school and Watson Elementary School PTAs, the district’s Drug and Alcohol Task Force and Sponsors of the Arts.

Mark Masin

A school board trustee since 2003, Masin, 60, the president of American Trans-Coil, a military communications manufacturer on Long Island, has long been active in the community. He is a graduate of American University, where he majored in political science, and his resume includes nine years as a coach in the Rockville Centre Soccer Club and participation in South Side High School’s Compact Team.
