Rockville Centre takes Major Girls Softball championship

It was a game that pitted Rockville Centre against Long Beach in the Major Girls Softball District 30 Championship on June 28. Having faced Long Beach earlier in the tournament, Rockville Centre knew what they were going up against. Long Beach set the tone by jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Rockville Centre answered them in the bottom of the first by knotting it at 1-1. This was a closely played game as both teams fielded stellar defense keeping the game close, with Rockville Centre clinging to a 4-3 lead heading to the bottom of the fourth inning. The Rockville Centre bats came alive as they broke open the game with a 5-run fourth, led by a 2-run double by first baseman Erin Dooney, followed by a big 2-run single by pinch hitter Colleen Raneri.

Rockville Centre’s ace pitcher Claire O’Brien struck out seven of the last nine batters to close the door and clinch the District 30 Championship. The final score was Rockville Centre 11, Long Beach 3.
