Rockville Centre to commemorate Older Americans Month

Posted

May is Older Americans Month, and here are some of the many ways Rockville Centre will celebrate:

On May 14 at 7 p.m., at the village board meeting, Mayor Francis Murray will present a proclamation to the Sandel Center Executive Committee proclaiming May to Be Older American Month in Rockville Centre.

May 16 at noon is the annual volunteer luncheon at Chateau Briand to acknowledge and celebrate the Sandel Senior Center and also the community volunteers who work so hard and so effectively on behalf of the center. The lavish luncheon, music, dancing and pins that represent their years of service are totally free to the honorees – the cost is covered in full by Friends of Senior Services, Inc.

On May 18 Sandel Center members will gather for the Necessities Bag Assembly. As part of the center’s community outreach, members have been busy sewing pillows which go into “Necessities Bags” that are given to mastectomy patients. On Friday, even more seniors will participate in putting together the complete bags which will go specifically to mastectomy patients at South Nassau Communities Hospital. The event will be attended by the creator of the Necessities Bag, officials of SNCH and the media.

On May 23 at noon the Intergenerational Committee of Sandel Seniors and South Side High School students will gather for a fun picnic-style meal at the senior center.

Throughout the month the guest artists at the center are the Sandel seniors themselves. In honor of Older Americans Month their woodcarvings and artwork will be on display all month.
