Fifteen members of the RVC Over 40 Basketball League traveled to Ireland in June to play against local Master-level teams in the Neptune Stadium in Cork. In addition to playing the Master League teams, the RVC Over 40 also entered two teams in a tournament with teams from cities around Ireland.
Sponsored by the Father Matthew’s Basketball League, the tournament was a fundraiser for Ireland’s national cystic fibrosis organization. Over 40 players met the poster child for the fundraiser, Sean Martin, and his parents Niall and Pauline.
In addition to Cork, the group visited Galway, Killarney and Kinsale where they mixed in golf, sailing and biking along with the basketball. The trip was organized by Jim McTighe, with assistance from Over 40 team members Dennis Sheehan and Pat Quirk, who are originally from Cork.
The RVC Over 40 League will launch its 20th season when play begins in January. Registration for the 2011 season will be held at the Recreation Center on Nov. 9 and 10 from 7 to 9 p.m.
