Talk about timing! Hewitt’s fifth graders, on a field trip designed to deepen their study of immigration, had the surprise of their lives while sightseeing aboard the Circle Line.
Traveling south on the Hudson River toward Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, they found themselves side by side with the space shuttle Enterprise as it made its way atop a barge to its new home at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.
Cameras clicked away as students, teachers and parents all excitedly watched the spectacle, complete with a maritime firemen’s escort, in absolute awe. It was a field trip the soon-to-be-middle schoolers will never forget.
