The Hispanic Brotherhood of Rockville Centre is set to host its 27th annual Scholarship Dinner on May 3 at Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David, 100 Hempstead Ave. Honorees include United Health Care Regional Plan Manager Angelo Zuffante, local Allstate insurance agent Julia Gazzio and Dr. Juan Luis Ledon, as well as Coca-Cola Refreshments and the Hispanic Federation.
For a donation of $110 per person, that will support the Brotherhood’s After School Tutorial Program, guests will enjoy cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner an hour later.
The not-for-profit agency was established in 1984 by a small group of Hispanic residents in an effort to assist the fast-growing population of immigrants from different Spanish language cultures. The program originated in 1976 by a Village of Rockville Centre Community Development Block Grant. As the size of the Hispanic population grew, so did the Brotherhood’s original service population.
The number of Hispanic residents has doubled since the 1980 Census, making this the fastest-growing minority in the United States. Collectively, Hispanics have a somewhat unusual profile. In attempting to avoid the crime, violence and intergenerational poverty of congested urban areas, this founders of the Hispanic Brotherhood of Rockville Centre chose to settle in a small, quiet, traditional American town. Here, education, transportation and public safety characteristics would bolster, not undermine, their determined efforts to integrate into community life. The diversity among Spanish language cultures is a factor that is frequently overlooked. This makes the general unavailability of service centers geared specifically to Hispanics even more acute.
