Rockville Centre’s Little League to honor veterans

The annual Rockville Centre Little League Opening Day Parade will take on a military flavor this year, as the League honors local veterans during its Opening Day Ceremonies. American Legion Post 303 will arrange to have representatives of every war since World War II at the festivities, and veterans will be throwing out the first pitches of the season.

The parade commemorating the 63rd season of the Rockville Centre Little League continues a long tradition in the village, and will kick off at 10:15 a.m. on March 31 from South Side Middle School. Players will march down Maple Avenue to Hickey Field, where the Opening Day Ceremonies honoring the war heroes will take place.

Like last year, each parade participant will be asked to bring an item of non-perishable food to donate to local Long Island food pantries. Last year's inaugural food drive collected over 2,200 items of food, and the League hopes to surpass that total this year. This year's food collections will benefit pantries run by the Vineyard Church, United Church, St. Agnes Outreach, the Economic Opportunity Commission and Central Synagogue of Nassau County.

For the first time, the Little League season this year will also feature a Challenger Division, where developmentally and physically challenged children will be paired with buddies and get a chance to experience the game of baseball. Challenger athletes will also be on hand for the season opener.
