Last week, the village began rehabilitation construction on the electric department’s cable tunnel in front of the Power Plant at Maple Avenue and Morris Avenue.
According to Rockville Centre spokesman Jeff Kluewer, the distribution vault, which is the tunnel that runs under the street, extends back to the power plant building and runs south under the sidewalk, is being repaired in sections.
Kluewer added that the top of the vault is 11 inches thick and needs to “cure” seven to ten days before it can accommodate heavy traffic.
The roof of the vault has been completed and the roadway should be fully repaired and asphalted by the end of the week, Kluewer said.
Over the two following weeks, Kluewer said, “a few slabs of sidewalk will be removed each day, the roof will be framed and a new concrete roof will be poured.” The project is expected to be completed May 25, weather permitting.
The project, which will cost approximately $164,250, will not cause any disruptions in service and is being budgeted out of the electric fund.
