The St. Agnes Boys Lacrosse Team kicked off its 2012 season with a thrilling 4-3 double overtime victory on April 20 at the Long Beach Recreation Center.

Kieran Fallon won the opening face-off and with teammates Justin Grillo and Armand Khachatourian, St. Agnes won the majority of mid-field battles all afternoon and controlled possession of the ball. Yet, Long Beach scored first following a St. Agnes turnover three minutes into the game.

The STAGS tied the game at 1 when James Crist fired a shot past the Long Beach goalie off an assist from Neal Crist. Regan Quinn continued the St. Agnes scoring effort and put St. Agnes up 2-1 when Kieran Fallon threaded a pass to a cutting Quinn on the crease, midway through the first half. At the 17-minute mark, Patrick O'Neill dodged his opponent from the restraining line and blistered an un-assisted bounce-shot into the Long Beach goal.

St. Agnes held a 3-1 lead at half time, but Long Beach mounted a strong comeback in the second half. Long Beach eventually tied the score 3-3 and despite a barrage of shots from the STAGS offense, the game remained tied at the end of regulation as both teams faced the daunting challenge of sudden-death overtime.

Goalkeepers Jack Zullo and Zach Walsh started the season in top form making 15 saves while letting up only three goals. And St. Agnes relied heavily on their defense as they entered the first of two overtime periods. Led by Morgan O'Brien, Brian Schaefer, Chris Hamaty and Ken Mulkeen, St. Agnes pushed back hard against their charging opponents. The St. Agnes goalies each provided great saves throughout sudden-death to keep the STAGS' chances alive.

Following a scoreless 5-minute sudden-death period, St. Agnes entered into a second sudden-death challenge eager to put an end to the contest. Two minutes into the period, St. Agnes seized opportunity off a Jack Zullo save in goal. Zullo quickly cleared the ball to Morgan O'Brien who charged down field. O'Brien crossed mid-field looking to penetrate Long Beach's defense. Seeing the opponent sliding toward him, Morgan passed the ball sharply to Neal Crist who unleashed a quick, low boring shot past the Long Beach goaltender.
