Dec. 1 was World AIDS Day. The global theme for this year is “Getting to Zero,” as in zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths.
To commemorate the day, and raise student awareness, the Wilson PTA AIDS Awareness Committee organized red collection cans in every classroom and students were asked to donate one dollar (or whatever they could afford). With the proceeds of its collection, the committee plans to purchase much-needed items, such as food gift cards and metro cards, for the patients and families of Nassau University Medical Center’s HIV/AIDS program.
Outside fourth-grade teacher Kara Spinellli’s classroom, a hat/glove/scarf/sock collection box gathered items that will also go directly to NUMC patients. And students decorated a poster outside the same classroom with heart stickers that they placed on the styrofoam zero or around the picture of the earth in its center. The decorated poster will be taken along with the other donations to the hospital, as a gift of hope. Each year the hospital has proudly displayed Wilson’s posters in its family waiting area, for all to see.
