Sixty-one-year member and honorary Chief Ron Storz, Sr., of Alert Engine and Hose Co. #2, died August 2 after a brief illness.
Chief Storz was eulogized by fire department members as a dedicated and longtime firefighter, who was part of the team that responded to memorable calls in the village, including the legendary Evans Dairy fire, the blaze at Paul's Luncheonette at Park Avenue and Sunrise Highway, and the evening wreck of the Long Island Railroad in 1950 that killed 31 people.
The lifelong village resident was also a decorated World War II veteran, who achieved the rank of Sergeant Major, the highest rank available to an enlisted man. He was a familiar sight in Rockville Centre every Memorial Day, marching in the village's parade in his original dress uniform, complete with awards, ribbons, medals and insignia.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St Agnes Cathedral on August 6. A full chief's service and burial followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
