RVC native remembered for selfless act

      The newsman and Rockville Centre native died Sunday, Jan. 13, due to complications following liver transplant surgery the previous Friday at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. Hurewitz, 57, donated 60 percent of his liver to save his brother Adam's life.
      Adam Hurewitz, MD, chief of pulmonary and critical-care medicine at Winthrop University Hospital, had liver disease. His condition was not available.
      Although friends and family were stunned by the news of his death, they were not surprised that Hurewitz died helping another.
      He was selfless, he was decent and he was a dedicated friend, said Jeff Cohen, editor of the Times Union in Albany, where Hurewitz worked for the last nine years. He understood that there was risk [to the surgery], but he felt the risk was worth it.
      Friends gathered for Hurewitz's funeral at Gutterman's Funeral Home on Wednesday, Jan. 16.
      Hurewitz began his journalism career almost 30 years ago, working for the now defunct Long Island Press and the New York Post before joining the Times Union staff. He covered some of the biggest stories of the last quarter century, including the trial of convicted organized crime boss John Gotti, but he also loved to tell the small stories of everyday life.
      Cohen said Hurewitz gave the same effort whether he was covering a major crime or a school board meeting. He was a reporter who cared deeply about bringing the readers interesting news.
      Longtime friend and fellow reporter Rick Karlon called Hurewitz a Renaissance man, always engaged in learning something new.
