Rockville Centre emergency services evacuated offices and residences around the area of 495 Merrick Road Monday morning when a gas main ruptured.

At about 8 a.m., contractors who were attempting to grind a tree stump at the location caused a rupture in the gas main.

Rockville Centre firefighters, under the supervision of Chief John Busching and assistant chiefs John Thorp and Robert Seaman entered a nearby basement to check for the possibility of accumulating gas, but determined that there was none. Employees from National Grid arrived on the scene and half an hour after emergency services arrived, evacuees were allowed to return to their homes and offices.
