In the award ceremony on October 18, town supervisor Kate Murray noted that Oppenheimer responds to over 400 calls a year, many of which are during the day, causing him to leave his business tto render care to Rockville Centre's residents. Oppenheimer joined the Rockville Centre Fire Department in February 1979. He became an Emergency Medical Technician in 1980 and an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician in 1981.Those 25 years make him the longest serving Advanced Care Technician in the department. Murray also praised Oppenheimer's particiation in departmental and company activities where he has served as a member of numerous committees and as Company Secretary.
"Firefighters make significant sacrifices and put their lives on the line evey day to protect people and their property," said Murray. "What makes the activities of our talented honorees so compelling is the fact that they volunteer, giving of their personal time, to ensure that our residents are safe." In recognizing heroic deeds performed during the normal course of the firefighters' day, Murray said, "This highlights the humanity and public spirit these special individuals embrace."
"Ed Oppenheimer is very devoted to his work," said Rockville Centre Mayor Eugene Murray, himself a former firefighter. "Ed answers calls day and night operating the radio and the ambulance, taking hours away from his own accounting business. The firremen are very proud to have voted for him to receive this honor. He is dedicated to the residents of our village."
" I am grateful for the honor," said Oppenheimer, "but basically all I'm doing is giving back a little bit to the community I love so much."
