Sailors head to homecoming 3-1 Showdown with Hicksville on new turf field

Last Saturday, junior quarterback Chris Logan completed 11 of 15 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns ‹ both to senior wideout Sean King ‹ and added a rushing score as Oceanside, seeded No. 11 in the 14-team conference, cruised past Long Beach 40-7. King had five catches for 127 yards, and junior running back Danny Lazrus had 104 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries.
³We¹re doing some really good things out there,² Coach Mike Janosko said. ³We let one get away against Uniondale, and it was nice to forget about it and bounce back strong. We haven¹t been 4-1 in my 12 years here, and we¹re looking forward to a big game against Hicksville.²
The Comets, seeded No. 13, were undefeated until they fell to Freeport last week. Their defense has pitched a few shutouts already, but it will be put to the test by Logan, King, Lazrus and the rest of the Oceanside offense.
Logan¹s two touchdown throws at Long Beach gave him 10 for 2006, tying a school single-season mark. ³Chris got his feet wet at the varsity level last year and he¹s been unbelievable this year,² Janosko said. ³We¹re mixing up the plays and keeping defenses guessing. We¹re running about 60 percent of the time.²
A 25-yard touchdown run by Lazrus was the first of five first-half touchdowns at Long Beach. Junior Shane Wynn opened the second half with a 47-yard TD run. The defense, led again by junior linebackers Wynn, Steve Polidaro and Chris Tringali, allowed only a late touchdown run by the Marines¹ Calvin Ross.
The win was big for several reasons. It put Oceanside in great position to secure a playoff berth, and allowed players and coaches to put the 24-21 loss to Uniondale in the closet. ³We¹re looking ahead, not back,² Janosko said.
The Sailors built a 14-3 halftime lead over Uniondale on Logan¹s scoring passes to Wynn and King. Then the Knights scored 21 unanswered points, including an 80-yard touchdown pass from Jamaul Boswell to Lloyd Martin in the fourth quarter.
Oceanside opened its season on Sept. 16 with a 34-22 victory over Valley Stream Central, and followed it up five days later by beating Port Washington 12-7. Logan had four touchdown passes in the opener and one in the second game.
Hicksville¹s wins have come against Plainview-JFK, Long Beach and Valley Stream Central. ³It should be a great game and a very exciting night,² Janosko said.
Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday.
