Sandel Center heads to Brooklyn for a walk

Posted

On a beautiful June morning, with the sun shining and a gentle breeze blowing, 35 members of the Sandel Senior Center, along with staff members Chris O’Leary, Nancy Codispoti and Kathe Hardenburgh, set out by bus over to New York City. Their goal?  To walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.

The camaraderie, the beautiful views, the joy of walking all combined to make it a great experience. To mark the occasion, Codispoti fastened a lock around one of the cables — a tradition when walking the bridge.

As a reward, waiting on the Brooklyn side were several pizza parlors and ice cream under a beautiful gazebo — looking over the East River. Walking over a mile, as they had, took all the guilt out of eating pizza and ice cream.

Returning by bus to Rockville Centre, all had a great feeling of accomplishment on this walk and look forward to the next challenge to come from belonging to the Sandel Senior Center.

Membership in the Sandel Center is available to people age 60 and older who live in Rockville Centre and the surrounding communities.  For more information about programs and services there, please call 678-9245.
