The two-year-old Successful Proactive Aging program is based on research findings that link healthy aging to factors under individual control. SPA combines a variety of physical fitness activities with a system of educational, emotional, and social supports and incentives that help seniors to avoid age-related illnesses and impairments.
"We are laying the groundwork for the coming Elder Boom population while meeting the quality-of-life needs of our current older adult population," said Senior Services Director Cyd Beth Charrow.
Already, 20 percent of Rockville Centre residents are over 60, about 4 percent higher than both New York State and United States averages,
according to the 2000 Census.
The National League of Cities has also invited the Village to apply to
present the SPA program at its City Showcase 2003 exhibit in December in
Nashville.
The Sandel Center recently became the first senior facility on Long
Island and the 85th out of 16,000 senior center nationwide to be accredited
by the National Institute of Senior Centers, a unit of the National Council
on Aging.
