Santa Claus ditched his sled for a ride on a Merrick Fire Department truck on Dec. 6. Firefighters gave Kris Kringle a lift to the Merrick Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas celebration at the Veterans Memorial Plaza gazebo by Merrick Avenue and the Long Island Rail Road station. There he greeted community children and listened as they described their holiday wishes. Volunteers from the Chamber and the Calhoun High School Key Club helped organize the event, which included a giant decorated Christmas tree, other Christmas decorations, hot chocolate, munchkins and candy canes.
