The Island Park man served as sheriff from 1986-88, when he retired as the only sheriff to rise through all the ranks. He started out as a corrections officer in 1955, and was named deputy sheriff in 1958 and supervisor of the office in charge of all civil activities before earning the rank of sheriff.
In her eulogy of her father, Loretta Hellrung said,
