Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino said the town will be waiving building department permit fees for residents who are still working on their homes in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Fees for replacement documents such as birth certificates and marriage licenses are also waived, according to Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad. The fee waivers will be in effect through June 30.
All town fees are waived for Sandy-related structural repairs that meet the original dimensions and specifications of the home, commonly called “in-kind” repairs/replacement. In addition, all town fees have been waived for temporary housing trailers and storage pods during construction.
Also through June 30, structural work on buildings will be permitted on Saturdays and Sundays between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. in addition to the regular construction hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
“As a longtime resident of East Rockaway, I witnessed firsthand Sandy’s devastation of local houses, businesses and properties,” Santino said, “Just as the Town of Hempstead was on the front lines of the cleanup and recovery effort in late 2012, we will continue to assist residents who are still struggling today to rebuild their homes and their lives.”
“I am pleased to work with the Supervisor to help residents who have been slammed by Sandy,” said Ahmad. “Many families lost valuable documents to the flood waters. Residents can come to the Town Clerk’s Office to replace vital records at no cost.
Although no appointments are required for Sandy-related business, residents are encouraged to call the building department ahead of time at (516) 812-3073 to minimize waiting times or contact the town clerk at (516) 489-5000 ext. 3046.
Residents of incorporated villages should check requirements of their local villages.
