Seven trustee candidates running in packed Freeport school board election

Posted

Three trustee positions on the Freeport Public Schools school board are up for election this year, two full term seats and one unexpired term seat, according to the district. Two incumbents and five new candidates have registered their names as candidates with the school district ahead of the May 19 election. Two candidates ran unopposed for school board seats in 2025.

Scott Richardson, current school board vice president, is seeking re-election, while Dina C. Skeffrey, a current school board trustee, hopes to be elected for the first time after she was an unelected board appointee last November to replace Beverly Jouissance after she was dismissed when it was discovered that she did not live within the district. Jouissance has decided to run again for a school board seat.

Marie Carmel Houanche is the fourth candidate, who’s recent experience includes being an administrator for the Freeport Veteran’s Affairs while being a retired veteran herself.

The final three candidates, Gabriela Castillo, Eddie Gordon and Michael Pomerico, are running together as one unofficial ticket. Pomerico and Castillo have served on the Freeport Board of Education in the past, while Gordon has worked with Freeport students and the community after graduating from Freeport schools.

The Herald will be publishing interviews with all willing candidates where they will be asked about their administrative experience and vision for Freeport Public Schools. Candidates and campaign managers can email afrancis@liherald.com to have their campaigns featured in an upcoming issue.
