The Nassau County Democratic Committee named Joseph K. Scianablo its candidate for Hempstead town supervisor.

Scianablo replaces Justin Brown who declined the nomination. The Republicans also need to name a second candidate as incumbent Supervisor Don Clavin decided not to run again and is expected to be appointed to run for a judgeship.

The GOP is expected to name its candidate on April 10.

Scianablo, a Garden City resident, brings a career of leadership, integrity and compassion, according to the county Democratic Party as he served in the Marines in Iraq and as a New York City police officer.

Raised in what was described as a working-class family, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1996. After his military service, he joined the NYPD with a specialty in domestic violence. After retiring, he then earned his law degree, dedicating his legal career to justice and public safety.

“Public service isn’t only what you do, it’s who you are. I’ve served my country, my city, and my community—and I’m ready to serve the people of Hempstead,” Scianablo said in a news release. “I’m running to lower the tax burden, clean up our broken infrastructure, and bring transparency back to Town Hall.”

The Democrats highlighted a 12.1 percent property tax increase; pay raises for top officials and long-neglected infrastructure problems across the town as the issues they are aiming to resolve.

“Joe Scianablo is exactly the kind of leader Hempstead needs right now,” County Chairman Jay Jacobs said in the release. “His courage, character, and deep commitment to public service make him the right candidate to take on the status quo. Joe has spent his life protecting others — he’ll bring that same fierce dedication to fighting for every family in Hempstead.”

Scianablo’s campaign will focus on lifting up working families, fixing broken systems, and making town hall accountable to the people again.

“I’ve never backed down from a fight—and I won’t back down from the fight for the people of Hempstead,” he said in the release. “This town deserves a leader who shows up, stands tall, and delivers real results. That’s exactly what I intend to do.”
