"We're ecstatic," Baker said. "It's a success. We're happy."
Last month, the civic group, which incorporated a year ago, learned that Cingular Wireless was also withdrawing its application to build a cell tower at the site. For months Baker had negotiated with officials of both service carriers to find an alternate location for their towers. The NCG building, on Merrick Road across from McDonald's, abuts a line of homes. The civic group took the position that the radio-frequency radiation given off by cell towers has not yet been proved safe, and that the towers could reduce property values for local homeowners.
Cingular officials said the company would seek to erect a tower at the Town of Hempstead garbage transfer station at Clubhouse and Merrick roads. Cingular needed to test the site, they said. Results are pending.
