Leahy, 18, a Kellenberg Memorial High School senior-s project was to collect new, or gently used, children-s books and record the stories in each book onto audio tape. the books and corresponding audio tapes were then given to the Rosa Lee Young Childhood Center, a not-for-profit agency, who would use the educational materials with the children at their center. The books will help the children develop better reading skills while fostering good listening skills with the tapes. Hearing the story as they read will also aid the children in learning how to pronounce difficult words.
Leahy and 12 Scout helpers collected over 800 books, of which 60 were suitable for recording. the other, unusable books were donated to the East Rockaway Public Library. A total of 122 hours was expended on the project.
Fusswinkel, a Lynbrook High School senior collected school supplies for needy children in a rural area of Kentucky. The project was undertaken with the support and guidance of Momma-s Love, a not-for-profit charitable organization, devoted to helping the area-s needy families. A total of 204 hours were spent on the worthy project.
Fusswinkel and 19 helpers collected books, binders, pen, pencils, rulers, calculators, and backpacks. Fusswinkel and his father Fred, a Lynbrook Police Department Detective, delivered the materials to Leslie County, Kentucky, themselves.
While in Kentucky, Fusswinkel became aware of the need for fire equipment at the Thousand Sticks Volunteer Fire Department. Upon his return , he collected donations of small fire fighting equipment for the needy department. through his efforts, he was even able to locate a used pumper that the Lakeview Fire Department was willing to donate. With the help of the Village of Lynbrook and the Lynbrook Fire Department, the fire truck was transported to the appreciative Thousand Sticks Volunteer Fire Department. Transportation was provided by the charitable organization, Helping Our Own. For this project, Fusswinkel enlisted the help of 22 volunteers and another 185 man hours were expended.
Leahy and Fusswinkel are the 102 and 103 Eagle Scouts in Troop N. 332-s 52-year history. They earned their rank under the leadership of Scoutmaster David Shields.
