Seaford High School welcomed their new class of 9th graders on Aug. 23, during the freshman orientation.

Administrators, teachers, guidance counselors, and fellow students welcomed the Class of 2022 and the 184 new students met their “mentors” — 75 juniors and seniors — according to a release by the district.

The incoming students were taken on tours of the building and given help locating their scheduled classes and finding their lockers by the upperclassman. Those mentors also answered the freshman’s questions about extracurricular activities, support services, athletics and academics.

“The Freshmen Buddies program has become an important part of how we welcome the ninth graders to our school,” Principal Scott Bersin said in the district’s release. “Our junior and senior leaders get to know the younger students and serve as positive role models. They will continue to meet with their buddy groups throughout the year.”

The mentors “shared tips on effective time management and encouraged their new peers to take advantage of the high school’s many offerings,” according to the release.

“We’re trying to help them have an easy transition from middle school to high school,” said Freshmen Buddies Secretary Adrianna DelPozzo.

Parents sat in on a question and answer session with Bersin and Assistant Principals Jennifer Bisulca and Nicole Schnabel, while the students met with their mentors. The program included details of the new personal learning initiative, in which students will be provided with their own laptops.

“High school isn’t that scary, but it’s a big change, no matter how many high school movies you watch,” Freshmen Buddies Vice President Katie Crawford said in the release.
