Seaford wins third straight to start season

Seaford’s football team nears the midpoint of its season unbeaten while showing it can produce wins in a variety of fashions.

The Vikings, who won their first two games convincingly, moved to 3-0 with a 13-7 come-from behind win at Locust Valley last Friday. The hard-fought win after tailing 7-0 at halftime came against a familiar face in with former longtime Seaford head coach Rob Perpall, who is the offensive coordinator at Locust Valley.

“When we got on the field we were very sloppy," said second-year Seaford head coach Mike McHugh, a former volunteer assistant under Perpall. “We made adjustments and we explained to the kids that we were beating ourselves and then we came out of halftime and drove down the field and scored and they started to right the ship.”

Seaford tied the game on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Michael Spinella to senior tight end Brian Hennessy. The Vikings then took the lead for good on a one-yard touchdown plunge from senior running back Brian Falk late in the third quarter.

Falk, who rushed for more than 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns last year, made some big plays in the Locust Valley win despite facing a defense that loaded the box with six or seven defenders at the line gearing up to stop the run, The heavy defensive focus on Falk allowed Seaford’s improved passing game under Spinella to shine with Hennesy and senior wide receiver Mark Villeck both making several key catches throughout the young season.

“Villeck and Hennesy have been tremendous for us,” McHugh said. “It's pretty difficult to load the box up against Brian's Falk, one of the best runners in the conference because we have the option then to put the ball in the air.”

The passing game was also in full effect in Seaford's 34-6 victory against Cold Spring Harbor on Sept. 12 with Spinella going 11-16 for 140 yards with Villeck hauling in three touchdown receptions. Villeck also caught two touchdowns in Seaford’s season-opening 40-7 win against West Hempstead on Sept. 5.

Falk has continued to be a force in the running game with 275 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the Cold Spring Harbor triumph. He also ran for 136 yards and three scores against West Hempstead.

“As we come into these games everyone knows who Brian Falk is and what Brian folk can do and defensive coordinators are looking to stop Brian first,” McHugh said.

The Vikings’ defense has also shined early on surrendering just 20 points through the first three games. McHugh said it has been a collective effort with nose guard Colin Campbell, linebackers Thomas Miranda, Giancarlo Belgiorno and Falk along and defensive end Matt Kind making key tackles.

Seaford will look to stay unbeaten this Friday when it hits the road to face East Rockaway for a 6 p.m. kickoff. The Vikings return home on Oct. 10 for a Friday night game against Malverne.
