Second SSHS addition is on schedule

Work is well underway on the second addition to South Side High School, and everything is expected to be completed on time.

The second addition, known as the south addition, is the larger of the two wings being added to the high school. At the end of the summer, the portable classrooms that have been at the school for years were demolished so that work could begin.

As of now, the steel girders are going in and the concrete slab for the first floor has been poured. The district’s construction crew is getting ready to pour the slab for the second floor.

The new wing will add many more classrooms to the high school. There will be seven new science classrooms added and a new social studies room. There will also be an entirely new library space, as well as a commons area.

In addition to adding space, the addition will also help make the campus safer. When the portable classrooms were still in use, students would have to walk outside to get to them for classes, which meant that doors all over the school had to remain unlocked all day, which was a large safety risk. Now, with the classrooms joined to the building, more doors will remained lock, leaving fewer ways to get into the building.

If work continues as scheduled, the new wing will be set to open in September, just in time for the start of the new school year.
