The apartments are expected to be completed by March 2005 and will go for $2,650 a month for a two-bedroom and two-bath setup.
Potential residents donÕt have to currently live in Nassau County or take in a certain income. Residents must, however, be 62 or over.
Rent will include house-keeping services and a daily continental breakfast. The apartments will also feature an outdoor swimming pool.
Nassau County Legislator Norma Gonsalves (R-East Meadow) was disappointed that the housing will be limited to seniors, noting there is a real need to build affordable places for young people to live.
ÒWe already have well over 1,000 senior apartments in East Meadow,Ó she said. ÒThatÕs quite a bit.Ó
On the plus side, the apartments will generate property tax revenue within the East Meadow School District, Gonsalves said.
East Meadow residents have long complained that theyÕre overburdened with property taxes since some 25 percent of the land in the neighborhood is not on the tax rolls, such as Eisenhower Park and Nassau University Medical Center.
