Supervisor Kate Murray "adopted" the women and hosted a Mother's Day celebration at Chateau Briand in Westbury. "No mother should be deprived of a Mother's Day celebration, so I decided to host a luncheon for some lovely ladies who did not have family members available for the occasion," said Murray.
Mary Gearrity of West Hempstead is one of the women who met at Town Hall on Friday before being brought to the restaurant. "It is a day to honor mothers, and it was very nice of Kate to do this."
"I think this is the loveliest idea, especially for people with children who are out of state, or in the armed forces. Everyone has been so gracious," said Jeanette Graziano, also of West Hempstead.
Mothers were treated to roses, corsages and a champagne toast to thank them for the contributions they have made to the Town over the years by raising children and helping them become productive members of the community. "It is important to honor our moms. We owe them a debt of gratitude," said Murray.
Murray said that she thought of the idea to honor these women as she visited area senior centers and heard in passing that several of them did not have specific plans for Mother's Day. "That was the seed that lead to this idea, and I thought what better way to pay homage?" This is the first year the Town is hosting such an event, and Murray said she is looking forward to doing it again next year.
Rose Parillo of West Hempstead was enjoying the special day. "This was really a great idea. It's going over big with everyone here."
The Chateau Briand donated the luncheon for their special guests, and East Meadow Florist provided the roses and carnation corsages. The mothers also received gift bags carrying perfume and scarves. "Showing a little caring and kindness can bring a smile to the face of a grateful mom. The look of joy on their faces is the greatest gift anyone could ask for on Mother's Day."
