Oceanside High School culminated its annual Battle of the Classes in the gymnasium on Jan. 21, during a night that featured an array of contests that all four grade levels participated in.
Every year, each class chooses a theme that serves as their team name, as well as the subject matter of artsy banners and student-designed T-shirts. This year, the Fairytale Freshman, Supernatural Sophomores, Jackpot Juniors and Sesame Street Seniors faced off in an epic battle, as the school’s oldest students came out on top. The juniors came in second, the freshman in third, and the sophomores finished last.
“All I can say is, the gym was jumping,” laughed Sandie Schoell, vice president of Oceanside’s Board of Education. “There was a lot of spirit in the air, a lot of excitement in the air. These students, I’m proud of all of them.”
Schoell said the event kicked off in September, when the students chose their themes. Each grade created a float in the school’s homecoming parade, and then prepared for the final night of contests, during which the winner was crowned. The students also helped out as teams at charitable community events, including Oceanside Community Service’s annual Turkey Shoot, which provided families with baskets of food in November for Thanksgiving.
She added that between the artwork involved, the dance routines and the athletic challenges that made up the event, there was something for every student.
“Each grade level works together,” Schoell said. “They learn friendship and camaraderie working with their classmates, and then they bring this spirit to our building, to our district, and finally, to the community.”
