September 11th memorial to be unveiled in VSSat., May 11, 3 p.m. Village Green

      Approximately 40 people with ties to the public and parochial school community are known to have perished.
      The one-hour program will include a reading of the names of those lost; the presentation of a symbolic flower for each person named; and the unveiling of a permanent memorial plaque, which will be mounted in front of Central High School.
      Hundreds of elementary and secondary school students will perform in a concert. There will be pre-program orchestral music performed by the District 24 orchestra conducted by Mark Huestis. Playing during the program will be secondary-school students and adults in the Valley Stream Community Band/ Orchestra conducted by Dean Karahalis. Singing choral numbers will be the High School District Festival Chorus conducted by Grace Kerr and a combined High School District and Elementary District 13 and 30 chorus also conducted by Kerr. A modern dance performance by Central students with choreography by the Martha Graham Dance Company and direction by Susan Russo is also on the program.
      Memorial banners created by elementary school students will grace the bandshell, and artwork created last fall by high school district students as a response to the September 11 tragedy will be on exhibit.
      The families of those lost, village officials, Board of Education trustees and other dignitaries will be there.
      Seating will be provided for approximately 1,600 people at the bandshell, which is located on Valley Stream Blvd., one block east of Central Avenue behind Village Hall and the Waldinger Library. Parking will be available in the nearby village lots and the streets surrounding the bandshell.
      In case of heavy rain, the ceremony will be postponed to Saturday, May 18 at 3 p.m. Attendees should listen to Cablevision News 12 and radio stations WALK (97.5 FM, 1370 AM), WBAB (102.3 FM), WCBS (88 AM), WHLI (1100 AM), WKJY (98 FM) or WINS (1010 AM) for news of a postponement.
