Man, I Feel Like A Woman
The Garden City Hotel will host a medical seminar, Breakthroughs & Challenges in Women's Health: What the 21st Century Promises, on Friday, Sept. 20. It is part of the Women's Wellness Programs given by the North Shore - Long Island Jewish Health System. Guest speaker Bill Ritter, co-anchor of Channel 7 Eyewitness News will give the keynote address. The day includes morning lectures and two workshop sessions which will address various health issues such as cancer, sleep disorders, heart disease, and stress. Breathe Easy
The Green Seminar will be hosted by Long Beach Medical Center on Monday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. It's purpose is to help people stop smoking and lose weight. Local Doc Commended
A Hewlett orthopedic surgeon was recently honored as The Shoulder Care Hero for September. Craig Levitz, M.D. was awarded the title by Shoulder1.com, a website about shoulder health that features shoulder care and technologies, and highlights shoulder surgeons for their advances in orthopedic surgery each month. Dr. Levitz was recognized for developing several new FDA-approved devices in conjunction with Smith & Nephew Endoscopy, a medical technology company. One of the devices is the electroblade, which prevents bleeding during surgery. The invention will shorten the duration of surgeries and will lessen the levels of fluid in the shoulder to reduce pain and quicken recovery after the operation. Dr. Levitz specializes in shoulder and knee surgery at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside.
Life Support Courses
South Nassau Communities Hospital will offer several courses in life support this month, run by the hospital's Department of Community Medicine. Courses include Basic Life Support (BLS), Infant and Child CPR (TOTSAVER), and BLS renewal. All classes are open to the public. At South Nassau's conference room #4, BLS will be offered Wednesday, Sept. 18 and 25, and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 28. Also, BLS Renewal will be offered at this location on Friday, Sept. 27. TOTSAVER classes will be available in two sessions on Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Mental Health Counseling Center at 2277 Grand Ave. in Baldwin. Dealing With Loss
Long Beach Medical center offers a weekly Bereavement Support Group. Each Thursday afternoon a mental health professional leads the session to assist individuals in dealing with the death of a family member or loved one.
