Surrounded by more than 200 supporters at a recent reception at Carltun on the Park in East Meadow, New York State Supreme Court Justice Peter B. Skelos, of Rockville Centre, officially announced his candidacy for re-election this November. Skelos is Long Island’s senior member of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court for the Second Judicial Department, which includes Nassau and Suffolk counties.
“For the past 14 years I have been fortunate to serve the people of Long Island in the Supreme Court, the last eight in the Appellate Division,” Skelos said. “The Appellate Division is effectively the court of last resort for most litigants in New York, and the Second Department, which includes eight other counties and approximately 50 percent of the state’s population, is the busiest appellate court in our state.”
Skelos’s supporters say he has a wealth of knowledge and experience from his work as a practicing attorney for more than 15 years, which was followed by four years as a District Court judge, and 14 years as a Justice of the Supreme Court, including eight years as a member of the Appellate Division. He is a member of the Nassau County Bar Association, and serves as the Administrative Chair of its charity, the We Care Advisory Board. Skelos is also a member of the Nassau County Criminal Courts Bar Association, Nassau Women’s Bar Association and NYS Hellenic Lawyers Association.
A well-regarded judicial scholar, Skelos, the brother of. Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, also of Rockville Centre, has authored many significant and often-cited opinions. He has been an adjunct professor at Long Island University - C.W. Post College for the past 17 years and has taught at Hofstra University Law School, the Nassau Academy of Law and at the NY Trial Lawyers Institute.
Skelos’s career achievements and professionalism have been recognized by the Criminal Courts Bar Association, the Italian Heritage Club, Nassau Jewish Lawyers Association, Fordham Law School Alumni,and Nassau Fraternal Order of Court Officers. He is a graduate of Fordham University Law School and received his B.A.from Emory University. He has been married for 29 years to Faith Skelos, an elementary school principal. They have two adult daughters.
