Family members living in Bellmore and Wantagh were unavailable for comment, but Brucia's mother, Sue Schorpen, who lives in Sarasota, Fla., has publicly asked for the death penalty.
On Feb. 1, 2004, a car wash surveillance camera video taped Smith pulling Carlie away by the arm when she was less than a mile from her mother's home. Her lifeless body was discovered five days later behind a church parking lot.
Florida prosecutors built their case on the footage, testimony from Smith's co-workers who recognized him from the video footage and the testimony of Smith's own brother, John.
During the trial, John Smith told the jury that his brother had confessed to raping the girl and then killing her. John said that his brother had also told him where Carlie's body would be found.
Joseph Smith was found guilty of first-degree murder, kidnapping and sexual assault of a child under the age of 12. He is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 28.
