City Manager Charles Theofan declared a snow emergency for Long Beach on Sunday, after the National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for Nassau County effective until Monday at 6 p.m.
Snow accumulations of between 11 and 16 inches were expected. Forecasters said there will be strong, gusty winds and low visibility.
Long Island Rail Road stopped running trains on Sunday night, and service remained suspended on Monday morning.
In Long Beach, the emergency meant that vehicles must be removed from designated Snow Emergency Routes (see list below.) For safety reasons, crews cleared those routes first so that fire trucks, ambulances, buses and other essential vehicles can pass safely.
City crews began salting and sanding on Sunday and have worked throughout Monday plowing snow. Park Avenue, Beech Street and Broadway were all cleared of snow on Monday and secondary roads have been plowed. Please note: due to blizzard conditions with high winds, snow continues to accumulate on roads that were already plowed and city crews are still plowing.
City officials advise residents not to travel unless it is absolutely necessary. Abandonded cars along city roads only hamper removal of snow, and city officials said that roads conditions remain icy icy, and strong winds may cause falling debris and tree limbs.
Parking and sanitation notice:
-Alternate side of the street parking is suspended until further notice.
-Regular Sanitation pick up will take place Tuesday, with a special pick-up in the East and West Ends on Thursday, December 29.
Nassau County has set up a NON-Emergency telephone hotline number 1-888-684-4274. In the event of a true emergency call 911.
