Sound the alarm, it's an emergency rock-out!

Organizers brings back 9-1-1 ROCKtober to raise funds for MVAC

The Malverne Volunteer Ambulance Corps has been a part of Monica Weitekamp’s life since she was 11, when her mother became a member. Now, at 17, the Kellenberg Memorial High School senior wants to give back to her community.

Actually, her public service began last year, when she was a junior, with the creation of 9-1-1 ROCKtober, a concert fundraiser whose proceeds went to the ambulance corps.

The event was a success, and Weitekamp is at it again this year with 9-1-1 ROCKtober 2: An Emergency Rockout. A half-dozen bands, including Weitekamp’s own, the Unspoken Few, will perform on Saturday at the Malverne American Legion Hall to raise funds to help the corps purchase a headquarters.

“One of the most important missions for the Malverne VAC right now is to secure its own home,” Weitekamp said. “Unfortunately, they lack the resources to do it on their own. We want to do what we can, and organizing and performing at this concert is what we do best.”

It’s clear that Weitekamp has a knack for organizing profitable fund raisers — the event raised $2,500 last year — but it’s music for which she has a passion. She has played the piano since age 5 and is a longtime member of the school band, but this is the first time she has played keyboards for a band outside school.

“I’m stoked,” she told the Herald. “I absolutely love it because you can get nearly any sound out of a synthesizer, which adds a whole different dimension to your standard rock song.”

The Unspoken Few came together about two months ago, and its four members are excited about performing at ROCKtober 2. According to Weitekamp, she and band mates Trish Torrales (vocals and acoustic guitar), Adam Medford (electric guitar) and Niko Karambatsakis (drums) “have compiled a set list of rock covers that we knew we’d enjoy and believed our audience would enjoy as well.”
